From scrapyard to urban neighbourhood

September 2024

At the beginning of September, a real estate expert discussion gave an exciting opportunity to take a look at the future of Ehrenfeld. Together with Alfons & alfreda and the networks of crenet e.V. and IMMOEBS e.V., we invited people to take a walk through the heart of Cologne´s Weststadt district to experience the promising development of this neighbourhood at first hand. The two major projects ‘PĀN’ and ‘THE WID’ will be built along Widdersdorfer Strasse in the coming years. During a tour of the properties, which cover a total area of over 20 hectares, around 100 participants had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the previously inaccessible areas and the potential of what is probably the most dynamic development area on the left bank of the Rhine in Cologne and to ask questions. After the tour, we ended the evening together with our guests with delicious street food, cool drinks and interesting conversations on the former scrapyard site.

About the projects

As part of our PĀN project, around 1,700 flats and 4,000 jobs, as well as a school, daycare centres, public green spaces, local amenities and space for art and culture will be built on the site of the former Max Becker raw materials recycling company over the next 10 years. In the immediate neighbourhood, Alfons & alfreda is developing the commercial quarter THE WID, which combines traditional industrial elements of the location with modern, agile working environments.
